Hi, my name is Emily Sheppard, I am an HCPC registered music therapist (AS018618) and the founder of Stroud Music Therapy. Ever since I was a child, I loved communicating with people through music and as I grew up I realised the power of music in building relationships and have never looked back.
As a creative musician, I bring years of musical experience and collaborations to my therapeutic practice. For many years, I practiced as a composer and also helped young people and teenagers (at Trinity Laben and Guildhall School of Music and Drama) to find their musical voice. These skills have carried over into my Music Therapy practice and I love to help children and young people develop through their musical expression and skills.
Stroud Music Therapy is based in a Music Therapy studio in Stroud Old Town. I work one to one with children and young people. The super power of Music Therapy is not having to use verbal communication and to discover a more direct way to communicate, through music. Sometimes parents can be part of sessions as well, depending on the child’s needs.
I also work for the Gloucestershire charity, Mindsong, facilitating Music Therapy sessions with people living with Dementia and their family members. I also run several choirs and work as a Music Therapist for Chroma too.
“Emily built a lovely therapeutic relationship with my daughter, giving her very responsive and focussed attention during their music therapy sessions. My daughter is non-verbal and it was a joy to see her expressing herself through music, making a variety of sounds, using a range of instruments and exploring the sensory aspects of the experience. The special way that music can be used to connect with others was very evident. Her confidence grew during the music therapy sessions and we were pleased to see an increase in her vocalisations as a part of this. Thank you Emily.
